There Once Was a Girl Called Selena. . . .

Selena Quintanilla, more commonly known as Selena, was a huge American singer with Mexican-American roots. She started out singing when she was at the young age of 10 years old in a band that consisted of her and her siblings. Her older brother, Abraham Quintanilla III, managed the band and played the bass guitar and her sister, Suzette, was on the drums.

She was the lead singer in her family band, Selena Y Los Dinos. They started out on a small scale, playing in weddings and clubs, but her talent was soon recognized. Selena grew up speaking English, so she learned the songs phonetically, but later on learned Spanish.

Selena, along with her family, recorded 7 albums as Selena Y Los Dinos. These albums were recorded under indie labels and production that specialized in Tejano music. Tejano is a vibrant and energetic genre originating from Southern Texas. It combines the traditional Mexican sounds of norteño and conjunto with the brass band music of German and Czech immigrants, with the accordion being the prominent instrument.

She was spotted performing by Jose Behar at the Tejano Music Awards in 1989. He had newly opened the Latin division of EMI Records and signed her on as a solo artist. Her brother not only wrote songs for her but also served as her producer.

From there on, the golden era of Mexican music started. Selena introduced a unique genre by blending country, western-style music, and traditional Tejano tunes. She was the first-ever female Tejano singer to win a Grammy.

Mexican Madonna: Selena’s Fashion Impact

Selena was an icon in more ways than one. Her powerful vocals and deep lyrics brought Tejano music to the front seat. She introduced the Tejano genre to the mainstream media. Her efforts in the music industry can never be forgotten or diminished.

Selena’s style was also a huge factor in propelling Tejano music into the world. Her sense of fashion, which was both risque and bold, really helped make a name for her.

She’s notoriously famous for her heavily embellished bustiers and crop tops lined with sequins, beads and rhinestones. She pioneered this bold style, inspired by Madonna and Janet Jackson. She always wore western-style and country-themed outfits regardless of the style. This was to show her pride in her Texan roots and also solidified her position as the Queen of Tejano music.

She walked and talked and sang like a Tejano Queen.

The tops were always accompanied by high-waisted pants. High-waisted bottoms are now experiencing a resurgence in popularity for their smart and sexy outlines. Selena also preferred two-piece sets, often paired with an iconic mariachi-inspired bolero jacket. These outerwear items added a western touch to her outfits, a nod to her Texan roots.

Selena had a vivid and captivating stage presence. She never shied from bold colors and designs and expressed herself loudly and proudly. Her style had a profound impact on both the music and fashion scenes simultaneously. People were inspired to wear their own roots on their sleeves and own those looks while also incorporating bold looks unique to them.

Selena also opened a boutique named Selena Etc. in two spots in Texas, where she sold famous Selena Quintanilla Jacket, styles and designs for others to try.
