She was spotted performing by Jose Behar at the Tejano Music Awards in 1989. He had newly opened the Latin division of EMI Records and signed her on as a solo artist. Her brother not only wrote songs for her but also served as her producer. 

From there on, the golden era of Mexican music started. Selena introduced a unique genre by blending country, western-style music, and traditional Tejano tunes. She was the first-ever female Tejano singer to win a Grammy.
